New Delhi: Harsimrat Kaur Randhawa, a 21-year-old Indian student, was shot dead in a violence broke out in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, on Wednesday evening. Her family claimed that she was struck by a bullet between a clash of two groups in Hamilton.
Hamilton Police confirmed the shocking incident that Ms Randhawa was killed on the evening of April 17. The police, at 7:30 pm, responded to a report of shooting in the area of Upper James Street and South Bend Road East. She was hit with the bullet in a series of gunshots between occupants of black sedan and white sedan.
Although paramedics rushed Harsimrat to the hospital, she succumbed to injuries from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Harsimrat had gone to Canada two years ago and was a student of Mohawk college in Hamilton. According to police, she was an innocent bystander when they violent clashes broke out.
Ms Randhawa’s family, from Punjab’s Dhunda village in Tarn Taran district, appealed to the Indian government to bring back the body of their daughter back to India.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed condolences on the young Indian girl’s demise.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa in Hamilton, Ontario,” the X handle of @IndiainToronto posted.
“As per local police, she was an innocent victim, fatally struck by a stray bullet during a shooting incident involving two vehicles. A homicide investigation is currently underway.”
“We are in close contact with her family and are extending all necessary assistance. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time,” the post further read.
