Four people, a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer, were killed in a shooting at a high-rise office building in Midtown Manhattan. The suspect, 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, also died at the scene from what police believe was a self-inflicted wound.
The incident occurred at around 6:40 pm local time on Monday (July 28) at 345 Park Avenue, a major skyscraper located just blocks from Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Centre, and the Museum of Modern Art. The building houses several major financial firms, including Blackstone, KPMG, Deutsche Bank, and the NFL headquarters.
Armed suspect wore bulletproof vest
According to reports, Tamura was wearing a bullet-resistant vest and carrying an AR-style rifle. He first exchanged fire with an NYPD officer in the building’s lobby before fleeing to the upper floors. Authorities received emergency calls from both the 32nd and 33rd floors as Tamura reportedly barricaded himself, prompting a lockdown in the area.
Tamura held a legal handgun permit and had an expired private investigator licence, officials confirmed.
Area locked down, shooter dead
New York Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences on social media, saying the fallen officer had been “struck down in the line of duty”. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Disch confirmed that the situation had been “contained and the lone shooter neutralised”.
During the evening rush hour, heavily armed police officers secured the area, deploying drones and surrounding the building.
Another grim milestone for US gun violence
The tragedy marks the 254th mass shooting in the United States this year, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive. New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated she had been briefed on the incident, while mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani said he was “heartbroken” by the attack and offered support to the victims’ families and the NYPD.
