New Delhi: In the wake of prevailing situation in Iran, some Indian students in the country were being relocated to “safer places”, the government said in a statement early Monday. It further stressed that “other feasible options” were also being examined. The development comes amid escalating conflict between Israel and Iran with the two countries trading more missile attacks despite repeated calls for a halt to the fighting.
“The Indian Embassy in Tehran is continuously monitoring the security situation and engaging Indian students in Iran to ensure their safety. In some cases, students are being relocated with the Embassy’s facilitation to safer places within Iran. Other feasible options are also under examination,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
Earlier on Sunday, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdulla spoke to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar regarding the evolving situation in Iran and students from the Union Territory stuck in the country.
“Just spoke to @DrSJaishankar regarding the situation in Iran, particularly the welfare & safety of Kashmiri students in the country. The Hon Minister assured me that
@MEAIndia is in close contact with their counterparts in Iran & will take all necessary steps to safeguard all Indian students in Iran,” he posted on X.
Over 1,500 Indian students, most of them from Jammu and Kashmir, are stranded in Iran. The parents of the students have urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jaishankar to ensure their safety and facilitate their safe return. Most of the stranded students are pursuing professional courses, primarily MBBS.
The latest conflict between the two countries began on Friday morning after Israel carried out airstrikes in Iran, targeting its nuclear and military sites. Israel’s “Operation Rising Lion” wiped out the top echelon of Iran’s military command and damaged its nuclear sites. Iran retaliated with air strikes on Israel. In the last three days, the countries have launched hundreds of missiles at each other in the last three days even as several countries urging them to exercise restraint.
