New Delhi: US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have agreed during a phone call that the conflict between Iran and Israel should come to an end.
In a post on TruthSocial, Trump stated, “President Putin called this morning to very nicely wish me a Happy Birthday, but to more importantly, talk about Iran, a country he knows very well. We talked at length.”
He pointed out, “Much less time was spent talking about Russia/Ukraine, but that will be for next week. He is doing the planned prisoner swaps – large numbers of prisoners are being exchanged, immediately, from both sides. The call lasted approximately 1 hour. He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end.”
A sixth round of nuclear talks between Iran and the United States, scheduled for this weekend, has been cancelled, mediator Oman announced on Saturday, amid ongoing air strikes between Iran and Israel.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump also agreed that the growing conflict between Iran and Israel should be addressed through “diplomacy and dialogue”.
Israeli airstrikes conducted under ‘Operation Rising Lion’ rocked Iran, killing a number of high-ranking military officials, including the head of the Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami, and the armed forces’ chief of staff, General Mohammad Bagheri.
The war between Israel and Iran have created huge tension in the Middle East. Justifying its attack on Iran, Israel said it had intel which indicated that Iran’s nuclear programme had almost reached “point of no return”. On Friday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei pledged to “act forcefully” and launched a number of strikes targeting Tel Aviv too.
