New Delhi: Bangladesh Police has formally submitted Interpol to issue Red Notices against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and eleven other individuals in connection with the July 2024 uprising that overthrew her 16-year rule. The request, made through the National Central Bureau (NCB) of Bangladesh Police, aims to locate and arrest the accused, who are currently considered fugitives.

Hasina, 77, fled to India on August 5, 2024, after a massive student-led protest forced her resignation. Since then, she has remained in exile, while Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, has intensified efforts to prosecute former Awami League officials.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued arrest warrants against Hasina and others in August, citing serious charges including crimes against humanity and genocide. In November, the Chief Prosecutor’s Office formally urged police to involve Interpol. The red notice request was submitted in three phases and stems from both investigative and judicial sources.

Enamul Haque Sagor, Assistant Inspector General of Police, confirmed the development, stating that the applications were based on ongoing case proceedings. If Interpol approves the request, Hasina and the others would be placed on its wanted list, facilitating cross-border arrest and extradition.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to bringing Hasina back to Bangladesh to face trial. As of January 21, the interim government stated it would seek international intervention if required to ensure accountability in the wake of the July unrest.
