The development came after Nahid Islam, one of leaders of the group, announced his resignation from Muhammad Yunus’ interim government. According to the group, the launch will be held at a grand ceremony at Manik Mia Avenue. “After the July 2024 uprising, new hopes and aspirations have been born in Bangladesh, Given those hopes and aspirations, the students have taken the initiative to form a new political party,” news agency ANI quoted Samanta Shermeen, Spokesperson of Jatio Nagorik Committee as saying.

She added, “Since the entire national unification during the uprising, we have realised that the ideologies of the existing political parties do not represent all the people of the country. The existing state structure is not capable of making Bangladesh a new modern country. We want to build Bangladesh a modern and important country in South Asia, connecting people across the world and adding new ideas.”

Student uprising led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina

Last year in August, a movement led by students led to the ouster of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after several days of violence and protests. According to a report published in the United Nations, close to 1,400 people might have been killed during the protests. As the protest grew, Hasina left for India, after which an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus was formed.

Speaking about Yunus, Shermeen added that he does not represent Jamat or BNP. She added that he along with other advisers represent the uprising. “They do not represent any political party,” she said further.
