New Delhi: Renowned Bangladeshi actor Nusraat Faria was detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka while trying to board a flight to Thailand on Sunday, Dhaka Tribune reported. The 31-year-old actor was reportedly taken into custody in connection with an attempted murder case linked to the 2024 Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Faria was detained at the immigration checkpoint. An arrest warrant was issued for Faria in connection with the violence that broke out during anti-government protests in July last year, which led to the resignation and exile of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The case is lodged at Vatara Police Station. It alleges that Faria funded the Awami League’s counter-efforts against the student-led movement and indirectly backed violent crackdowns. She is one of several high-profile persons named in the case, which also includes allegations of attempted murder when the protests were at its peak.
Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Badda Zone, Shafiqul Islam, told Prothom Alo that Faria had been detained.
“Our team went to the airport to get her based on information from Immigration Police. A few days ago, a court approved an attempted murder case against her. She has been shown arrested in that case,” police officer Sujan Haque was quoted as saying by Bangladeshi news outlet bdnews24.com.
After she was detained at the airport, the actor was taken to Vatara Police Station. After that, she was shifted to the office of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police for more interrogation.
Faria started her career as a radio jockey before foraying into television and film. In 2015, she made her acting debut with Aashiqui: True Love, a Bangladesh-India joint production. Her most prominent role till now has been portrayal of Sheikh Hasina in ‘Mujib: The Making of a Nation’ (2023), a biographical film on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman directed by noted Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal.
The film, a joint production between India and Bangladesh, was critically acclaimed but also faced political scrutiny —especially in the wake of Hasina’s ousting during the 2024 uprising.
