New Delhi: China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke over the phone with his Pakistani counterpart Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Sunday. He told him that China was closely monitoring the evolving situation between India and Pakistan and deeply concerned over the escalating tensions, China’s state-run Global Times reported.
Wang informed Dar that China backs a fair, prompt and impartial probe into the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which left 26 tourists dead. While speaking to Dar over phone, Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, expressed hope that both sides would show restraint, carry out dialogue, and take measures to ease tensions. Wang Yi reiterated China’s opposition to unilateralism and hegemonic policies in the region, Global Times report pointed out.
The Pakistani leader updated Wang on the latest developments and the tensions between the two neighbours, in the wake of the terror attack.
India has taken a slew of steps against Pakistan, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and putting a total ban on issuing visas to all Pakistani citizens.
As per the Global Times report, Wang said that fighting terrorism calls for a shared responsibility of all nations, and China always backs Pakistan’s firm counter-terrorism actions.
Around 537 Pakistani nationals exited India via the Attari border over the past three days, after the end of the deadline for short-term visa holders on Sunday, an official told ANI.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is carrying out a probe into the Pahalgam terror attack. NIA officials are present at the attack site, which is very popular with tourists. The site has been sealed off so that evidence is preserved. Teams are also speaking to eyewitnesses to the April 22 terror attack.
