Citizenship, taxes and war: Trump’s first-week impact on America and the world

Washington: Donald Trump’s return to the presidency has shaken the global stage within just a week of assuming office. Since January 20, his decisions have sparked controversy worldwide, from China to Europe and Iran to Ukraine. Even within the United States, several moves have left citizens unsettled, as Trump implemented policies that were not part of his campaign promises. The question that now arises is that, are Trump’s actions reshaping the US and the world for better or worse?

One major promise during Trump’s campaign was imposing a 60 per cent tariff on Chinese imports. However, a week into his term, Trump seems to have softened his stance on China. In an interview, he hinted at the possibility of a trade agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinpin and signalled a shift in tone that has surprised many.

Trump’s cautious stance on Ukraine

On the Ukraine war, Trump’s approach has been cautious. While his predecessor positioned the US firmly against Russia, Trump appears hesitant to continue this stance, creating uncertainty about America’s role in the conflict. If the US steps back, it risks losing European allies, who may seek new partnerships.

AI deal and executive orders

Adding to the controversy is Trump’s announcement of a USD 100 billion AI business deal named Stargate. Tesla CEO Elon Musk publicly criticised the plan and cited doubts about the companies’ financial capacity. While Trump dismissed Musk’s objections as personal grievances, the discord highlights potential challenges within his administration. In just one week, Trump has signed many executive orders, unsettling global and domestic dynamics. As the turmoil unfolds, it remains to be seen whether these decisions will solidify his legacy or create lasting challenges for America and the world.
