New Delhi: Denmark has been ranked as the least corrupt country in the world followed by Finland and Singapore while South Sudan ranked at the bottom as the most corrupt nation in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2024 compiled by Transparency International.
The index ranks 180 countries and territories based on perceived levels of public sector corruption, as assessed by experts and business leaders. It uses a scale from zero to 100, where “zero” indicates a highly corrupt environment and “100” represents a very clean one.
List of most corrupt countries: What’s India’s rank?
India ranked at the 96th spot with an overall score of 38, a decline from 39 in 2023 and 40 in 2022. In 2023, India ranked 93rd. Among India’s neighbours, Pakistan ranked 135th, while Sri Lanka stood at 121st. Bangladesh ranked even lower at 149th. China got the 76th rank.
Corruption dangerous issue across world
The 2024 CPI highlighted that corruption remains a serious issue worldwide, though positive changes are occurring in several countries. Research has also shown that corruption poses a significant threat to climate action, obstructing efforts to reduce emissions and adapt to the unavoidable consequences of global warming.
Since 2012, 32 countries have made significant progress in reducing corruption. However, 148 countries have either remained stagnant or worsened during the same period, indicating that much work still needs to be done.
The global average score of 43 has remained unchanged for years, with over two-thirds of countries scoring below 50. As a result, billions of people continue to live in nations where corruption destroys lives and undermines human rights.
