New Delhi: In a surprise announcement, former US President Donald Trump revealed he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin about initiating immediate negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. This unprecedented disclosure has sparked significant international attention given Trump’s continued public commentary on geopolitical issues.

Trump, in a statement posted on his “Donald J. Trump Posts From His Truth Social” X account, asserted that both leaders agreed to have their respective teams commence discussions without delay, beginning with a call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to inform him of their conversation.

I just had a lengthy and highly productive phone call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, Energy, Artificial Intelligence, the power of the Dollar, and various other subjects. We both reflected on the Great History of our Nations, and…

“I just had a lengthy and highly productive phone call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, Energy, Artificial Intelligence, the power of the Dollar, and various other subjects,” he said.

Trump’s post detailed a wide-ranging discussion between himself and Putin covering Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, the strength of the US dollar, and other subjects. He recalled the shared history of US-Russia cooperation during World War II and highlighted their mutual desire to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump claimed Putin agreed with his approach, invoking Trump’s “COMMON SENSE” campaign slogan.

“We both reflected on the Great History of our Nations, and the fact that we fought so successfully together in World War II, remembering, that Russia lost tens of millions of people, and we, likewise, lost so many! We each talked about the strengths of our respective Nations, and the great benefit that we will someday have in working together,” his post reads.

The former President stated that he and Putin agreed to work closely together, which could involve visiting each other’s countries. “But first, as we both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine. President Putin even used my very strong Campaign motto of, “COMMON SENSE.” We both believe very strongly in it. We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations,” he added.

Trump identified his team, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of the CIA John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, as the individuals leading negotiations.

Trump reiterated his previous claim that the war in Ukraine would not have happened if he were still president, a viewpoint he says Putin shares. He thanked Putin for the release of American schoolteacher Marc Fogel, seemingly linking the release to his own engagement with the Russian president. “Millions of people have died in a War that would not have happened if I were President, but it did happen, so it must end. No more lives should be lost! I want to thank President Putin for his time and effort with respect to this call, and for the release, yesterday, of Marc Fogel, a wonderful man that I personally greeted last night at the White House. I believe this effort will lead to a successful conclusion, hopefully soon!” he added further.
