Washington: The United States Army has declared that transgender individuals will no longer be permitted to enlist, following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump that prohibits “transgender ideology” and the use of “invented pronouns” in the military.
In a post on social media platform X, the US Army wrote, “The US Army will no longer allow transgender individuals to join the military and will stop performing or facilitating procedures associated with gender transition for service members.” The Army said that people with gender dysphoria would be treated with dignity and respect for their willingness to serve the country, but gender-affirming care would be put on hold indefinitely.
“Effective immediately, all new accessions for individuals with a history of gender dysphoria are paused, and all unscheduled, scheduled, or planned medical procedures associated with affirming or facilitating a gender transition for Service members are paused,” the post said.
Transgender reinstated
In an executive order signed on January 27, President Donald Trump stated that identifying with a gender different from one’s assigned sex at birth “conflicts with a soldier’s commitment to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle, even in their personal life.”
He said that a revised policy on transgender people in the military was necessary, arguing that their inclusion negatively impacted military readiness. Trump had previously pledged to reinstate the ban on transgender troops, which had been lifted in 2016 under the Barack Obama administration.
At a Republican retreat in Miami, Florida, Trump reaffirmed his plan to ban transgender individuals from the military, saying that “to ensure that we have the most lethal fighting force in the world, we will get transgender ideology the hell out of our military.”
