A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 struck southwestern Japan on Monday. The prompted the country’s meteorological agency to issue a tsunami advisory. The tremor, which occurred at 9:19 pm local time, was centred near Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu Island. Tsunami warnings were also issued for the neighboring Kochi Prefecture.
The agency said that waves could reach up to one meter, though the full extent of the damage was not immediately clear. Japan, located along the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire,” is highly vulnerable to seismic activity due to frequent volcanic eruptions and fault lines in the region. The US Geological Survey also reported the earthquake, which led local authorities to take preventive measures.
