New Delhi: Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said that Israel made a big mistake while vowing punishment for the rival country, as the tension between the two countries escalated following the US’ military strike on Tehran’s nuclear sites. Though Iranian Supreme Leader vowed to intensify attacks against Tel Aviv, he made no mention of the US attacks. “The Zionist enemy has made a big mistake, committed a big crime; it must be punished and it is being punished; it is being punished right now,” said Khamenei in a post on X.

US entered Israel-Iran conflict
The US military struck three nuclear sites in Iran – Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz – early Sunday with missiles and 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs., inserting itself into Israel’s effort to destroy Iran’s nuclear programme. President Donald Trump announced the strikes, saying the decision to strike Iran was aimed at the destruction of its “nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world’s number one state sponsor of terror.”
Following Trump’s involvement in the conflict, Iran slammed the US for crossing “a very big red line”. “The US has attacked us; what would you do in such a situation? Naturally, they must receive a response to their aggression,” Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said during a call with France’s leader, according to the president’s website. Khamenei had on Wednesday warned the US against strike say it will “result in irreparable damage for them”.
US’ decision to join the Israel-Iran conflict drew mixed reactions with Western allies including the UK and Australia backing the move while countries like China, Russia and Pakistan slamming the Trump administration.
Israel, Iran war escalates
Following US’ strike, the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel escalated with the two rivals intensifying their attacks against each other. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said it launched a barrage of 40 missiles at Israel. Late Sunday, the Israeli military said it again attacked military infrastructure sites in Tehran and western Iran. Israel struck Iranian missile launchers in Bushehr, Isfahan and Ahvaz, and a command centre in the Yazd area.
