New Delhi: US President-elect Donald Trump’s son Eric Trump has posted a picture on the social media platform X, in which Donald Trump is shown ‘ordering’ Canada, Greenland, and Panama Canal on Amazon. In the picture, Trump is seen opening the Amazon website on his mobile phone and “adding” these countries to the cart with an intention to buy them. Eric captioned the picture, “We are so back.”

‘Controlling Greenland is absolutely essential’

The post comes a day after Donald Trump suggested that he still intends to purchase Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark, stating that US ownership and control of the island is an “absolute necessity” for national security.

The President-elect of the United States revived a discussion from 2019, when he proposed purchasing Greenland, the world’s largest island. This idea was rejected by Denmark at the time. On Sunday, Trump expressed on Truth Social, “For the sake of national security and global freedom, the United States believes that owning and controlling Greenland is absolutely essential.”

Trump made the remark as he nominated PayPal co-founder Ken Howery for US ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark. In response, Howery said on X that he would work to “deepen the bonds” between the US, Denmark and Greenland. Responding to Trump’s post, Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede said by email that the island is “not for sale and will never be for sale”.

‘I think it is a great idea. 51st State’

On December 18, the President-elect suggested merging Canada into the US and making it a part of the country, calling it “a great idea”. He wrote on his social media: “No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!”

In late November, after meeting with Canada PM Justin Trudeau at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Donald Trump started calling Trudeau the “Governor” of the “Great State of Canada”. “It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” he wrote.

‘Ridiculous fees’

On December 21, Donald Trump hinted that his new administration might attempt to regain control of the Panama Canal, which the US had “foolishly” given away to its Central American ally. Trump criticised the “ridiculous” fees charged to ships passing through the crucial waterway.

He said that if the principles, both moral and legal, of this “magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America, in full, quickly and without question”. “I’m not going to stand for it. So to the officials of Panama, please be guided accordingly,” he said.
