Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday announced his resignation, citing internal battles and growing discontent with his leadership. He said that Canada deserves a genuine choice in the upcoming election and admitted he could no longer be the best candidate for the role.
Trudeau’s decision came after former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from his Cabinet in December. She criticised his economic policies, especially in light of threats from US President-elect Donald Trump. The resignation came after the housing minister’s departure, sparking questions about how long Trudeau could remain in office amid increasing unpopularity.
About Trudeau
Trudeau is the 23rd prime minister of Canada. He succeeded his father Pierre Trudeau in 2015. He is nnown for his charisma and progressive ideals and he became the second-youngest Canadian prime minister. Before politics, Trudeau worked as a teacher, nightclub bouncer and snowboard instructor.
He gained prominence for championing immigration reform, gender equality and environmental issues, such as legalising cannabis. However, his support for these causes alienated many voters, particularly due to his efforts to balance economic growth with environmental preservation, such as imposing a carbon tax and supporting a controversial pipeline expansion.
Popularity sinks
The rising cost of living and surging immigration have contributed to Trudeau’s decline in popularity. Despite a relatively low COVID-19 death toll in Canada, Trudeau’s government faced criticism over financial measures and immigration policies after the pandemic.
Further complicating his leadership, tensions between Canada and India escalated after Trudeau accused India of being involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India strongly denied the allegations, which resulted in a diplomatic standoff and strained relations between the two countries.
Trump threatens tariffs
Amid these controversies, US President-elect Donald Trump also threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian goods unless Trudeau addressed the flow of migrants and drugs to the US. Despite mounting pressure, Trudeau has remained silent in recent weeks, signalling his weakened political position.
