Washington: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday unveiled a missile defense system known as ‘Golden Dome’. Built at the cost of around $175 billion, this system would be the first to be put in space by the US. The ‘Golden Dome’ is expected to be operationalised by three years, before the end of Trump’s tenure.
Sharing further information, Trump said that the system will help in countering aerial threats in the US, which include cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. Speaking at the White House, he said, “During the campaign, I promised the American people I would build a cutting-edge missile defense shield. I am pleased to announce today that we have selected architecture for this state-of-the-art system.”
What is Golden Dome System?
Once it comes into being, this will be a ground- and space-based missile system. The system will help in intercepting or destroying incoming missiles in mid-air. He added that the Golden Dome will be able to intercept missiles coming from any part of the world or even space. The missile will deploy next-generation technologies across the land, sea, and space, including space-based sensors and interceptors.

Sharing further details alongside him, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said that the latest system will be integrated with existing defence capabilities. He added that the missile will help in protecting the US from missiles like cruise, hypersonic, and ballistic, as well as drones, even if they are nuclear. The Golden Dome is inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome air defence system, which has intercepted thousands of rockets and other projectiles since it was made operational in 2011.
Recently, China and Russia slammed the US for the Golden Dome missile system, calling it “deeply destabilising, as it may turn space into a battlefield.” It “explicitly provides for a significant strengthening of the arsenal for conducting combat operations in space,” Russia said in a statement.
