‘Hugely welcome’: How world reacted to the India-Pakistan ceasefire

New Delhi: Following four days of intense military engagement that drew international concern, India and Pakistan have agreed to halt all hostilities, with the ceasefire taking effect from 5 pm. According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, the DGMOs of both countries spoke and arrived at a consensus to cease all military activity across land, air, and sea.

The two sides have issued internal directives to implement this agreement, and another conversation between the DGMOs is scheduled for May 12 at noon. Officials confirmed that today’s call was initiated by Pakistan’s DGMO, leading to the agreement, but clarified that no further talks on other issues are planned for now.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed “all efforts to de-escalate the conflict”, as India and Pakistan agreed to an immediate ceasefire. “We are monitoring but we welcome all efforts to de-escalate the conflict,” Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General said.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy

The UK welcomed the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, with Foreign Secretary David Lammy urging both sides to maintain the de-escalation. Calling the agreement “hugely welcome,” Lammy stressed that dialogue and restraint are in everyone’s interest, especially after a night of heavy military activity.
