New Delhi: The President of the United States, Donald Trump is known as a colourful person who never shies away to voice his opinions and desires, always hitting the headlines for reasons we cannot keep count. This, Trump has said something which has amused people, with the US President raising his hand for none other than the role of the leader of the Catholic Church!

After attending the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome, President Trump suggested that he would be happy to be the next Pope. When he was asked about who should be the Catholic Church’s leader after the demise of Francis, Trump quipped, “I’d like to be Pope. That would be my number one choice.” However, he later turned serious manner and gave his opinion about the potential successor of Francis.

While he claimed to have no particular favourite for the next Pope, the US President mentioned the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, as someone who could be “very good” for the role. Notably, Dolan is the Archdiocese of New York’s part, and in 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as the Archbishop of New York. He attended the 2013 conclave where Francis was elected as the Pope. Trump said, “No, I don’t know, I have no preference, guys. I might say we have a Cardinal that happens to be out of a place called New York who is very good. So we’ll see what happens.”

I was excited to hear that President Trump is open to the idea of being the next Pope. This would truly be a dark horse candidate, but I would ask the papal conclave and Catholic faithful to keep an open mind about this possibility!
