Zohran Mamdani, the 33-year-old democratic socialist is leading the Democratic Primary for New York City Mayor, former Governor Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday, June 24, in what is being dubbed as a ‘political earthquake’ by political analysts.
Zohran Mamdani is leading with 43.8 percent of the vote, according to early results shared by New York Board of Elections. Andrew Cuomo, who is behind with 36.3 percent, has conceded his defeat to Mamdani in a phone call, a local New York media outlet reported.
“Tonight was not our night, tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani’s night. I called him, congratulated him,” he said.
New York City may not have a winner until next week, when the elections board will release the results of ranked-choice elimination rounds. The declared winner of the primary will get the nomination for November’s General election.
