Kolkata: US President Donald Trump on June 17 blasted apart French President Emmanuel Macron over a claim of a ‘truce’ between Israel and Iran. He called Macron ‘publicity seeking’, and criticized the latter for his comments over Trump and Iran-Israel ceasefire.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social account, “Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to D.C. to work on a “cease fire” between Israel and Iran. Wrong! He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that. Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay Tuned!”
Earlier, Macron claimed that Trump had made an offer to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. While speaking with reporters at the G7 summit, Macron said, “An offer was made, especially to get a ceasefire and to then kick-start broader discussions.” He added, “We have to see now whether the sides will follow.”
Notably, in the recent past, Trump claimed to have played a pivotal role in brokering the truce between India and Pakistan following the attacks in Pahalgam in April 2025 and Operation Sindoor. Even on June 15 this year, Trump claimed through a Truth Social post, “Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal, just like I got India and Pakistan to make, in that case by using TRADE with the United States to bring reason, cohesion, and sanity into the talks with two excellent leaders who were able to quickly make a decision and STOP!”
However, Randhir Jaiswal, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, dismissed the claims of the US President and said that trade or tariff discussions were not part of the ceasefire talks. He said, “The issue of trade or tariffs did not come up in any of those discussions. The External Affairs Minister has also made it clear that the cessation of firing was decided upon through direct contacts between the DGMOs of India and Pakistan.”
