Tehran: Israel has reportedly launched a new wave of strikes on Iran, according to a BBC report. In response, Iranian state media said air defence systems were activated across the country to counter the incoming threats.
Press TV reported that missiles were intercepted in southern Tehran, while Iran’s national broadcaster, IRIB, confirmed additional strikes targeting the western parts of the capital. The city of Karaj, located near Tehran, was also hit, as per IRIB reports.
The BBC has verified a video showing the aftermath of one such strike near Tehran.
Air raid sirens rang out in Jerusalem on Friday after a projectile was detected from Yemen, AFP reported, citing Israeli military sources.
This comes a day after Israel launched a large-scale assault on Iran’s capital, aiming at its nuclear infrastructure and killing at least two senior military figures. The assault has significantly escalated tensions, raising fears of a full-scale war between the long-standing regional rivals.
Friday’s strikes, considered the most intense attack on Iran since the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, reportedly resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking military officials and scientists. Among the dead were Gen. Hossein Salami, commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, and Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, state media confirmed.
Roughly 200 Israeli aircraft participated in the operation, striking around 100 targets. Israel’s military spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, said Iran responded by launching more than 100 drones toward Israel, adding, “all the defense systems are acting to intercept the threats.”
