Israel military issues apology over wrong map of India following online backlash

New Delhi: Israel’s Defence Forces (IDF) have apologised for posting an incorrect map of India. The country’s military put out a post on ‘X’ which wrongly showed Jammu and Kashmir as part of Pakistan. Later on however, the IDF put out a post clarifying that the map might not have accurately depicted the borders.

IDF’s post on X

Taking to social media platform ‘X’ to clarify the earlier post, IDF wrote, “This post is an illustration of the region. This map fails to precisely depict borders. We apologize for any offense caused by this image.”

The apology followed severe online backlash by Indian users, who pointed out the mistake in the map. Indians were furious over Jammu and Kashmir, being shown as part of Pakistan. Several netizens also tagged Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the post.

Apart from replying to their earlier post, the Israeli military also responded to an Indian handle, which goes by the name Indian Right Wing Community. The apology by the X handle was posted almost an hour after the original post was made on the social media platform.

The Indian government has so far not responded to the post by the Israeli military. Netizens however took to the platform to vent out their anger and frustration. One comment on the post by the Israeli military read, “Now you understand why India remains neutral. In diplomacy, no one’s really your friend.”

India has repeatedly asserted that the entire Jammu and Kashmir, including Ladakh is part of the country. Several regions in the Union Territory have been occupied by China and Pakistan illegally and the Indian government has vowed to take back its land.

In the past few years, India and Israel have developed a very close relationship. In fact PM Narendra Modi became the first Indian leader to visit the country in 2017. Both countries also enjoy a strong trade relationship, with India being the fifth largest trade partner of Israel. India is also an important buyer of military equipment from the country.

The map posted on X underlined Tel Aviv’s perception of Iran as a “global threat”. The IDF said in its original post, “Iran is a global threat. Israel is not the end goal, it’s only the beginning. We had no other choice but to act”, and had a distorted map attached to it.

The post followed rapidly increasing tensions between Israel and Iran, following airstrikes on Iran, which Israel said was aimed at the country’s dangerous and illegal nuclear facilities. In retaliation, Iran launched several drones and also shot down Israeli jets. Tensions continue to rise in the West Asian region, following this new conflict, after the Israel-Hamas war.
