Tokyo: At least eight people were injured after a woman wielding a hammer went on a rampage at a university in Japan’s Tokyo, attacking several people on Friday, local media reports said.
The accused woman, in her 20s, was arrested at the scene at the Hosei University’s Tama Campus in Machida district. The injured have been rushed to a hospital and their condition is stated to be normal, state broadcaster NHK reported.
Jiji Press reported the arrest of a woman in her 20s, while broadcaster FNN stated that the attacker, appearing to be a university student, was restrained by university staff. However, Tokyo police have yet to confirm these details. Emergency vehicles were dispatched to the scene.
This incident adds to a series of violent acts in Japan, including the 2022 assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, a stabbing at a McDonald’s in December 2024, and a 2019 attack in Kawasaki.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are trying to ascertain more information about the woman and the motive behind the attack.
