Hamburg: At least 12 people were wounded in a knife attack at Hamburg’s central railway station on Friday evening, according to a report by Reuters citing Germany’s Bild newspaper. Local authorities confirmed that the suspected attacker has been taken into custody. The violent incident took place on the platform between tracks 13 and 14, where the assailant targeted commuters with a knife, police officials said.
Out of the 12 injured, three individuals are reported to be in critical condition, while three others suffered serious injuries. The remaining six sustained minor wounds, Bild reported. Some victims reportedly received emergency treatment aboard trains stationed at the platform.
“According to initial information, a person injured several people with a knife at the main train station,” Hamburg police stated on X.
The attack occurred at the central station in downtown Hamburg, a vital transportation hub in Germany’s second-largest city, serving both domestic and international train services. In the aftermath, authorities cordoned off sections of the station to carry out their investigation, as noted by the Associated Press.
Germany has witnessed a troubling spike in violent incidents recently, including several knife attacks. Just last Sunday, four people were stabbed in a bar in Bielefeld. Following the arrest, the investigation has now been transferred to federal prosecutors after the suspect reportedly told police he held jihadist beliefs.
