New Delhi: A ‘fatwa’ or religious decree issued by Iran’s Shiite cleric labelled US President Donald Trump and Israel prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “enemies of God”. Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi, in the fatwa, urged Muslims across the world to unite and make the American and Israeli leaders regret for threatening the Islamic republic leadership.

The cleric said that anyone who threatens or attacks the leadership and authority of the Islamic Ummah (community) is considered a “criminal of mohareb,” a term used in Iranian law for someone who wages war against God.

“Any person or regime that threatens the Leader or Marja (May God forbid) is considered a ‘warlord’ or a ‘mohareb’,” Makarem said in the fatwa, according to Mehr News Agency. The cleric further said an “any cooperation or support for that enemy by Muslims or Islamic states is haram or forbidden. It is necessary for all Muslims around the world to make these enemies regret their words and mistakes.” “May God protect the Islamic community from the evil of the enemies,” it added.

The fatwa comes days after Iran and Israel agreed to end their 12-day conflict that erupted on June 13. The war between the two countries began after Israel launched a series of strike in Iran, targeting its nuclear sites and military bases. Israel’s bombing killed several top Iranian military officials and scientists linked to its nuclear programme. Tehran retaliated with full force and launched ballistic missile attacking Israeli cities.

The hostilities between the country ended after the US joined Israeli forces and struck three nuclear facilities of Iran. Tehran responded to the US’ bombings by bombarding an American military base in Qatar.
