The country (Nepal) lies in an earthquake-prone zone. The reason for this is that it lies on a convergent boundary where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. Just 2 days back, the country’s Kaski district in western Nepal witnessed an earthquake of 4.7 magnitude. Not just that, on May 14, the Chheskam area of Solukhumbu district of eastern Nepal, witnessed a 4.6 magnitude quake.

The country positioning makes it prone to such frequent tectonic activities. Not only does it lie on a convergent boundary, but also in the Himalayan region which is a zone of intense seismic activity, which happens as a result of the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This collision leads to Indian plate pushing beneath the Eurasian plate, which leads to subduction, which creates immense pressure and strain on the Earth’s crust.

Nepal has seen several earthquakes, the most devastating of which was in 2015. At the time, a 7.5 magnitude quake had hit the nation and left at least 8,969 people dead. The earthquake occured on April 25, 2015.
