Ontario landlord under stress over unpaid rent, tenants tie Khalistan flag on roof

Ontario: A Canada-based landlord, Raman Kumar, residing in Ontario, has been facing issues with rent and utility payment defaults since January 2025. The situation was witnessed by Nitin Chopra, an independent journalist who recorded video clips and conducted interviews at the property.

“Another victim landlord in Ontario. Tenants have not paid rent since Jan 2025, nor are they paying utility bills. What should a landlord do? When can we fix the system? Enough is enough!” Chopra wrote in his social media post.

The property owner, Raman Kumar, told Chopra that five students had moved into the house in October 2024. Since January, the tenants have reportedly stopped paying rent—amounting to approximately 3,300 Canadian dollars per month—as well as utility bills.

In one of the videos shared by Chopra, a Khalistan flag is clearly seen tied to a post outside the house.

“I’m paying the mortgage, property tax, and insurance out of my own pocket,” Kumar said. “This is putting me under extreme mental stress. I myself live in a rented house and have my own expenses. These tenants are making my life miserable,” Kumar added.

Kumar also claimed that the Khalistan flag was tied to the property without his permission. “I am very scared by these kinds of activities, and the neighborhood is also unhappy. Authorities need to intervene. We’ve always lived peacefully as a community, and this is creating unnecessary tensions,” the landlord claimed.

Kumar suspects there may be more than five students residing in the house as he has observed many number of visitors.

The landlord further noted that the tenants have become a nuisance to the neighborhood, particularly during night hours. Several neighbors have also lodged complaints due to the disturbances.

Although Kumar has initiated legal action to resolve the issue, he expressed frustration over the pace of the process. “I’ve started legal proceedings, but it will take time,” he said.
