Ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s wife Asma files for divorce: Report

Asma Al-Assad, the wife of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has filed for divorce and seeks to move to London. It is alleged that she is not satisfied with her life in Russian capital Moscow, according to various reports published in Turkish and Arab media.

The reports suggest that Assad’s wife had filed for divorce in a Russian court and permission to leave Moscow. Asma’s request is being reviewed by Russian officials. Asma, who is a dual Syrian-British national, was born and brought up in London by her Syrian parents, as per a report in BBC. Asma married Assad in Syria in 2000 when she was 25.

Asma Assad suffers from leukemia

According to a Reuters report, Asma al-Assad was diagnosed with leukemia in May this year. This was almost five years after she announced that she had fully recovered from breast cancer.

There are reports that Assad is keeping in Russia under heavy restrictions despite his asylum request being accepted by Russian authorities. Authorities have reportedly not allowed Assad to take part in political activities and leave Moscow.

Russia seizes Assad’s assets

A report in Israel’s Jerusalem Post newspaper said that Russia has also seized Assad’s assets including gold, $2 billion and several apartments in Moscow.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Assad’s brother Maher al-Assad, has not got asylum in Russia as his request is sill being analysed. Russia officials have reportedly kept Maher and his family under house arrest.

Bashar Al-Assad overthrown in bloodless coup by HTS

In early December, Bashar al Assad was ousted by Syrian rebels led by led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is designated by US as a terrorist organisation. While, US officials have indicated that they will lift $10 million bounty from HTS chief Abu Mohammad al-Julani.
