New Delhi: Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) is facing a major service disruption that began on the evening of Thursday, May 22. The outage, which started around 6 pm IST, has left many users unable to access the platform. According to the monitoring site DownDetector, over 2,100 issue reports were logged at the height of the problem.
Users reported a range of issues, including trouble logging in and failure to receive direct messages. The disruption has affected both desktop and mobile versions of the platform, causing widespread inconvenience. As of now, the company has not released an official statement regarding the cause of the outage. In addition, several users took to other platforms to report encountering broken links on X.
X has announced that it will comply with an Indian government directive to block over 8,000 accounts in the country. The move follows a legal order, but the platform has voiced its opposition to the directive, citing concerns over freedom of expression.
“X has received executive orders from the Indian government requiring X to block over 8,000 accounts in India, subject to potential penalties including significant fines and imprisonment of the company’s local employees. The orders include demands to block access in India to accounts belonging to international news organisations and prominent X users,” the social networking website said.
Despite agreeing to carry out the block, X questioned the legitimacy of the request.
“In most cases, the Indian government has not specified which posts from an account have violated India’s local laws. For a significant number of accounts, we did not receive any evidence or justification to block the accounts.”
