Pakistan backs Trump for 2026 Peace Prize over India-Pakistan ‘mediation’

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has once again declared his belief that he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, following his nomination by the Pakistani government for the 2026 award.

Trump’s assertion comes on the heels of Pakistan’s formal nomination, which cites his “decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership” in resolving the India-Pakistan conflict. This claim, however, has been repeatedly dismissed by the Indian government.

“President Donald J. Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize in 2026 in recognition of his decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership during the recent India-Pakistan crisis,” Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said in a post on X.

Trump, speaking to reporters, stated his belief that he should have received the prize multiple times, citing his alleged role in mediating conflicts in various regions, including the India-Pakistan border, the Congo-Rwanda crisis, and disputes involving Serbia and Kosovo. He specifically highlighted his perceived success in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, a claim that stands in stark contrast to the Indian government’s perspective.

“They should give me the Nobel Prize for Rwanda, and if you look, the Congo, or you could say Serbia, Kosovo, you could say a lot of them,” Trump told reporters. “The big one is India and Pakistan. I should have gotten it four or five times.”

While details are scarce, Trump also alluded to a purported peace agreement scheduled to be signed on Monday between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, a region plagued by long-standing conflict. “I should have gotten it four or five times,” Trump reiterated. “They won’t give me a Nobel Peace Prize because they only give it to liberals.”

Trump took credit for facilitating this agreement, though no independent verification of US involvement has been made public, leaving the specifics of his purported role shrouded in uncertainty. Trump asserted that he “should have gotten it four or five times”.  He further attributed his lack of a Nobel Peace Prize to a supposed bias against conservatives within the Nobel committee.

Trump’s claim is not entirely without precedent. He has received several Nobel Peace Prize nominations from supporters in the past, primarily for his role in the Abraham Accords, a series of normalisation agreements between Israel and several Arab states.

Despite these nominations, he has yet to receive the award. The Nobel Peace Prize, awarded annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to peace and conflict resolution. To date, the committee has remained silent on Trump’s candidacy.
