Pakistan minister gets fact-checked by foreign journalist on TV interview over false claims

New Delhi: Pakistan’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar was shown mirror by a foreign journalist about his country’s history of supporting terrorist organisations. This happened on Wednesday as the Indian armed forces conducted strikes in nine terror targeted sites in the early hours of the day.

Missile strikes were carried out in the terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Bahawalpur, Sarjal, Sialkot, Barnala, Kotli and Muzzaffarabad were some of the regions where the strikes took place. These strikes were made in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed lives of 26 people. The mission was named as Operation Sindoor by the Indian government.

After the Operation Sindoor, Pakistan minister Tarar appeared on UK-based television channel Sky News for an interaction. He claimed that the Indian armed forces targeted civilian population. The host Yalda Hakim countered the claims, citing the statement of Indian Armed Forces, wherein only terrorist camps were attacked.

The minister said that there are no terrorist camps in Pakistan and the country was itself a victim of terrorism. Hakim responded by pointing out the admission of Pakistan defence minister Khawaja Asif that Pakistan funded and backed terrorist groups.

“On my programme, just a week ago, your Defence Minister Khawaja Asif admitted that Pakistan has for decades had a policy of funding, backing and using terrorist groups as proxies in the country (India),” the journalist noted.

“In fact, in 2018, President Donald Trump cut military aid to Pakistan because he accused Pakistan of playing a double game,” she added.

She also brought in the comments of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari that it was part of Pakistan’s history to fund and back terrorist organisations.

When Tarar invited the journalist to visit Pakistan, Hakim reminded that Osama bin Laden, who was the mastermind of the 9/11 terror attack, was traced in Pakistan’s Abbottabad before he was shot dead by US military.
