Islamabad: A Pakistani man who allegedly helped the Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) in kidnapping former Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav from Iran was killed by unknown gunmen in Balochistan on Friday night. The man, identified as Mufti Shah Mir, had earlier survived two attempts on his life.
As per the Dawn, the gunmen attacked Mir, while he was coming out of a local Mosque in Turbat after offering prayers. The gunmen had fired multiple shots at him. His killers are believed to be behind the killing of several terrorists in Pakistan in recent times.
Who Was Mufti Shah Mir?
Under the guise of a scholar, Mir used to work as arms and human trafficker. He was a member of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI). He was believed to have close ties with officials of the ISI. It is thought that Mir used to visit terrorist camps in Pakistan and helped terrorists in their infiltration bids into the Indian border through the Line of Control (LoC).
Know about the Kulbhushan Jadhav Case
After retiring from the Indian Navy, Jadhav used to run a business in Iran’s Chabahar. He is currently on death row in Pakistan after being convicted of spying by a Pakistani court in 2017. Condemning the arrest, India has accused Islamabad of not following a fair trial.
His execution was stopped in 2019 after India approached the International Court of Justice over his arrest. During the hearing, the court asked Pakistan to review his conviction and provide him consular access. Jadhav was kidnapped from the Iran-Pakistan border in 2016 and handed over to Pakistani military personnel.
