New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi while concluding his three-day visit to France paid tribute to Indian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War I and World War II. PM Modi visited the historic Mazargues Cemetery in Marseille alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, where many of the Indian soldiers killed in these wars are laid to rest.
Highlighting Marseille’s historical connection to India’s freedom struggle, Modi paid homage to Veer Savarkar’s escape attempt from HMS Morea in 1910. In a post on X, Modi acknowledged Savarkar’s “bravery” and expressed gratitude to the people of Marseille and French activists who opposed his extradition to British custody. He emphasised the enduring inspiration Savarkar provides to generations of Indians.
“In India’s quest for freedom, this city holds special significance. It was here that the great Veer Savarkar attempted a courageous escape. I also want to thank the people of Marseille and the French activists of that time who demanded that he not be handed over to British custody. The bravery of Veer Savarkar continues to inspire generations!” PM Modi posted on X.
Further strengthening bilateral ties, Modi inaugurated the new Indian Consulate in Marseille, emphasising its role in fostering people-to-people connections between India and France. He also paid tribute to the Indian soldiers who died during both World Wars.
“President Macron and I reached Marseille a short while ago. This visit will witness important programmes aimed at further connecting India and France. The Indian consulate which is being inaugurated will deepen people-to-people linkages. I will also pay homage to the Indian soldiers martyred in the First and Second World Wars,” PM Modi wrote earlier in the day.
The Prime Minister received a warm reception from the Indian diaspora in Marseille. In addition to the commemorative events, Modi and Macron visited a logistics centre and toured the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project in Cadarache.
