New Delhi: Fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi has been arrested in Belgium. According to reports, Choksi was arrested by the Belgium authorities at the request of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The 64-year-old, wanted in connection with the Punjab National Bank fraud case, fled India in 2018. He has been on the radar of security agencies ever since.
The authorities in India are yet to issue an official statement on the arrest. Choksi was granted Belgian residency on November 15, 2023. He was living in c with his wife Preeti Choksi.
Implicated in massive fraud at PNB
Indian security agencies had requested Belgian authorities to facilitate his extradition to India. The authorities from both the countries were in touch for past two months.
Choksi, along with his nephew Nirav Modi, is implicated in the massive fraud at PNB, where the two are accused of orchestrating a scheme that defrauded the bank of more than Rs 14,000 crore.
