Qatar brokered Iran-Israel ‘ceasefire’ backed by US: Report

New Delhi: Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani played a crucial role in securing Iran’s nod for a US-proposed ceasefire in the war with Israel, according to a senior official involved in the negotiations, Reuters reported.

The development took place after US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance sought Qatar’s Emir intervention, and urged him to help ease mounting tensions in the Middle East after Iran fired missiles on a US air base in Qatar on Monday.

Shortly after this, Qatar’s prime minister carried out talks with Iranian officials and successfully brokered Tehran’s agreement to the terms of ceasefire.

A senior Iranian official also confirmed that Iran agreed to the ceasefire brokered by Qatar. However, Iran initially dismissed the claims made by the US President, pointing out that no ceasefire agreement had been reached.

Trump thanks Qatar Emir

Earlier, Trump wrote on social media platform Truth Social that a “complete and total ceasefire” would take effect within 24 hours.

He wrote: “On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both countries, Israel and Iran, on having the stamina, courage, and intelligence to end what should be called ‘THE 12-DAY WAR’.”

Before announcing the ‘ceasefire’, Trump expressed his gratitude to the Emir of Qatar in a separate post and said, “CONGRATULATIONS WORLD, IT’S TIME FOR PEACE!”

In another post, he wrote: “I’d like to thank the Highly Respected Emir of Qatar for all that he has done in seeking peace for the Region.”
