New Delhi: In a historic offensive against Naxalite insurgents, Indian security forces have eliminated over 300 Maoists in first 150 days of 2025. It marked the most significant counter insurgency success in decades.

The operations ,primarily concentrated in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, have also led to the surrender of  more than 2,000 insurgents according to Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai.

A major turning point in fight against Maoists was the elimination of the top Naxal leader Basava Raju alias Nambala Keshava Rao . He was recently killed in a 50-hour operation in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district. He was the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Maoist).

Another significant achievement was “Operation Black Forest”, a 21-day mission targeting the Karegutta hills in the Chhattisgarh- Telangana border. This operation led to the elimination of 31 Maoists including some of the influential leaders. A subsequent amount of weaponry was also seized during this operation.

This operation has been executed with full force especially in the key areas such as Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and various parts of Maharashtra.

These intensified steps are aimed at combating Naxalism by May 2026, as pledged by the state CM recently. As per officials, the state government is aimed to deal with the issue of Maoists movements. Notably, there has been gradual decline in Naxalite related violence in last few years. These incidents  have declined from 1,080 in 2014 to just 374 incidents in 2024, according to a report by News 18.

Officials said that the complete elimination of Marxism can only be achieved if there is a swift and consistent effort in the said direction. Various socio economic and developmental policies have also been undertaken for the upliftment and the eradication of Maoists movements.
