New Delhi: Ousted Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina has warned of persecution of minorities in her country in the first Christmas greetings to Christian community since she her ouster.
The former Bangladesh PM in her message noted that today’s Bangladesh has witnessed growing divisions, spread of hatred, and persecution of minorities in the country.
‘Bangladesh witnessing growing divisions’
“The ideals, teachings, and messages of Jesus Christ reflect his philosophy of humanity and love. His life demonstrated the virtues of forgiveness, magnanimity, and the pursuit of a better world for all. However, in today’s Bangladesh, we witness growing divisions, the spread of hatred, and the persecution of minority communities. Communal harmony is at risk, and it is imperative that we safeguard our nation from these divisive forces by building a humane society. The teachings and ideals of Jesus Christ can guide us in this endeavor. He championed the supremacy of the human soul, sought to eliminate all divisions, and inspired humanity to embrace the bonds of love and unity,” Hasina said in a message posted on her party Awami League’s X handle.
Extending her Christmas greeting to the Christian community, Hasina further stated, “December 25 marks Christmas, the most significant religious festival for the Christian community. On this joyous occasion, I extend my heartfelt greetings to the Christian community and the people of Bangladesh. Throughout history, the Almighty has sent great personalities as guides for humanity, and Jesus Christ is one of them. He worked as a beacon of liberation for humanity, advocating for a compassionate world built on love and understanding.”
Bangladesh in turmoil since Hasina ouster
Bangladesh is going through a political turmoil since the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following massive demonstration against her rule in August this year. There have been attacks on minorities and opposition figures after the fall of Awami League government after demonstrations.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh government led by Muhammad Yunus has demanded extradition of Sheikh Hasina to face the judicial process. Hundreds of people including students were killed in demonstrations across the country.
