‘Silence emboldens bully’: Chinese envoy slams US tariffs, ‘firmly’ stands with India

New Delhi: Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong launched a scathing attack on the US, referring to it as a “bully” and saying that the country had been benefiting from free trade for a long time and is using tariffs as bargaining chips. He made these blistering remarks at an event organised by an independent think tank Chintan Research Foundation (CRF) on Thursday.

The Chinese envoy also stated that the 50 per cent tariffs imposed on India are threatening and that China opposes it firmly. He further added that India and China are acting as the double engines of economic growth in Asia. “US has long benefited greatly from free trade but now uses tariffs as bargaining chips to demand exorbitant prices from various countries. The US imposed tariffs of up to 50% on India, and has even threatened to impose  more. China firmly opposes it. In the face of such acts, silence only emboldens the bully. China will firmly stand with India to uphold the multilateral trading system with the world trade,” he added.

The envoy then pointed out the significance of India and China as the major developing countries and that both should work together to foster regional as well as international development. He added, “China and India’s unity benefits Asia. We are the double engines of economic growth in Asia. India and China unity benefits the world at large”.

He stressed the fact that India and China should enhance “strategic mutual trust” and “avoid mutual suspicion” amongst each other. Feihong stated that China would welcome all Indian commodities in its market. He praised India’s rising demands on IT, software and biomedicine, while mentioning China’s rapid expansion in the fields of electronic manufacturing, infrastructure construction and new energy. “If connected, the two major markets will produce an effect of one plus one bigger than two,” he added.

Hope for democratisation

The Chinese envoy added that if both India and China “live in harmony,” they can maintain the “Asian miracle” amid global challenges and stand together against the American “hegemony, protectionism, power politics, and bullying.”

“At a time of hegemony, protectionism, power politics and bullying, China and India have the responsibility to take the lead in promoting an equal and orderly multipolar world and enhancing the representation and voice of developing countries in international affairs. When China and India join hands, there is great hope for the democratisation of international relations and the development and growth of the global South,” he said.
