‘Something big is yet to be done’: Hasina reacts as mob torches her ancestral home in Dhaka

New Delhi: Amid escalating political turmoil in Bangladesh, ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has levelled serious accusations, claiming a plot to assassinate her and her sister. In a Facebook Live address to Awami League supporters, Hasina asserted that the ongoing movement against her was a calculated attempt on her life, directly implicating Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus in the alleged conspiracy.

“If Allah has kept me alive despite these attacks, then something big is yet to be done,” Hasina said while addressing party reporters via Facebook Live.

Hasina expressed grief and outrage over the vandalism and arson attack on her father’s historic residence in Dhaka. This house, once home to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh, holds immense historical significance as the location where the country’s independence from Pakistan was declared in 1971.

The same house tragically witnessed his assassination in 1975. Hasina had transformed the residence into a museum, preserving its historical value. The attack resulted in significant damage and destruction, with images showing flames engulfing parts of the building. “The memories of me and my sister are now erased. Houses can be burnt but history cannot be erased”.

Following the vandalisation of the memorial and residence of Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 in Bangladesh by an angry mob, his residence is being demolished this morning. A man was also seen waving a Palestinian flag at the spot.

“They do not have the power to destroy the country’s independence with bulldozers. They may destroy a building, but they won’t be able to erase the history,” Hasina was quoted as saying by news agency AP.

Addressing her supporters, Hasina questioned the motives behind the attack, demanding justice from the people of Bangladesh.

Hasina further accused protesters of using unconstitutional means to seize power, urging Bangladeshi citizens to resist the actions of the new leadership. Reports indicate that the mob, allegedly calling for a ban on the Awami League, forced their way into the premises, causing substantial damage using hammers, crowbars and planks, ANI reported.
