Seoul: A toddler looking out the window of a flight would generally appear as a heartwarming sight of a child enjoying their flight but its connection to the devastating South Korean plane crash adds a haunting note as it shows the final moments before the tragedy.

The child, identified as the youngest victim, tragically lost his life alongside his parents in the disaster that claimed 179 lives on Sunday.

Kang Ko, 43, his wife Jin Lee Seon, 37, and their son were killed when the Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crashed while attempting an emergency landing at Muan International Airport, slamming into a wall and bursting into flames.

The three-year-old boy was on his first international trip — a family holiday to Thailand. It was intended to be a joyful Christmas celebration and a milestone for Kang Ko, who worked in public relations for the Kia Tigers baseball team following their championship win earlier this year.

“My son is going overseas for the first time in a night flight. First stamp on the first passport lol!! Went to the zoo and walked with the tiger and climbed on the tiger,” the boy’s father, username @kkangkko said in a post on Instagram while sharing the boy’s picture.

The father captured every moment of the trip, from sightseeing at a beautiful Thai palace to the heartbreaking image of the toddler gazing out of the plane window on their flight to Bangkok.

But their joyous vacation ended in an unimaginable tragedy. South Korean media reported the boy as the youngest victim of the plane crash. The family’s final holiday photos, shared on social media, symbolize not just the loss of lives but also the dreams and futures that were taken away.

Of the 181 people onboard, only two flight attendants survived the crash. The remains of 174 victims have been tentatively identified, according to Korea Times on Tuesday.

Teams from the US National Transportation Safety Board and Boeing have arrived at the site of South Korea’s worst aviation disaster to assist with the investigation.

Authorities are examining potential causes of the crash, including a bird strike, adverse weather conditions, and mechanical failure.
