Bangkok: Thailand Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra revelaed her assets exceeding USD 400 million on Friday, as required by the country’s National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). Among her possessions are 75 luxury watches valued at approximately USD 5 million and 217 designer handbags worth around USD 2 million.
According to documents shared by local media, Paetongtarn’s total assets amount to over 13.8 billion baht (USD 400 million), while her liabilities stand at nearly five billion baht, resulting in a net worth of 8.9 billion baht (USD 258 million). Her financial portfolio includes investments worth 11 billion baht, along with an additional billion baht in cash and deposits. She also holds properties in locations such as London and Japan.
Family wealth revealed
The asset declaration was confirmed by an unnamed representative of the Pheu Thai Party, as reported by AFP. The figures indicate that Paetongtarn, the youngest daughter of former telecom tycoon and ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has substantial wealth. Thaksin, who once owned Manchester City Football Club, has a net worth of USD 2.1 billion and ranks as Thailand’s 10th-richest person, according to Forbes.
Paetongtarn assumed office in September, becoming the fourth member of her family to lead the country in two decades. Her father, despite being ousted and exiled after a coup, continues to exert huge influence in Thailand’s political landscape. Yuttaporn Issarachai, a political science expert from Sukhothai Thammathirat University, told AFP that wealth plays a major role in Thai politics, often cited as a factor for military interventions over transparency concerns.
Former PM’s net worth drops
Srettha Thavisin, the earlier prime minister, had declared assets totaling 985 million baht before stepping down in August following a decision by Thailand’s constitutional court. During his tenure, his net worth had decreased from 1.02 billion baht.
