Washington: TikTok was removed from major app stores in US on Saturday night just before as a federal law that bans the popular social media platform went into effect. By 10.50 pm Eastern Standard Time, the app was no longer available on Apple’s App Store and Google Play, following the implementation of a law that prohibits offering TikTok unless its China-based parent company, ByteDance, sells the platform to a US-based company, according to The Associated Press reports.
Users who already had the app installed were unable to use it as usual. Upon opening TikTok, they encountered a pop-up message explaining the situation. The message read, “A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the US. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now.” The notification also expressed hope for a resolution, stating, “We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!”
