Beijing: China on Sunday slammed the US after Washington imposed tariffs on imports on the country and pledged countermeasures’ to defend its legitimate rights. It said that the tariff imposed by the US violates global trade rules and may lead to disruption of drug control initiatives by two countries.
Releasing a statement, China said, “Trade and tariff wars have no winner. The US’s unilateral tariff hikes severely violate World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules.” China’s reactions have come after US President Donald Trump announced 10 percent imposition of tariff on Chinese goods.
China addresses concern on fentanyl
Addressing concerns over fentanyl, China also said it not only took a tough stand on the drug but also cooperated with the US. Notably, fentanyl is a drug that has been linked to overdose deaths in the US in recent times.
China also addressed concerns over fentanyl, a synthetic opioid linked to overdose deaths in the US. It said Beijing has taken strong steps to control the drug and has cooperated with Washington. “In the spirit of humanity and goodwill, China has given support to the US’s response to this issue,” it added while noting that China classified all substances related to fentanyl as a controlled category in 2019, as was requested by Washington.
“The US needs to view and solve its fentanyl issue objectively and rationally instead of threatening other countries with arbitrary tariff hikes,” the statement added further.
Trump imposes tariffs on imports from China, Mexico and Canada
Notably, issuing an order early on Sunday, Trump announced the imposition of tariffs on imports from China, Canada, and Mexico. Like China, other countries have also condemned the move and imposed counter-tariffs against the US.
“Mexico not only does not want fentanyl to reach the United States but anywhere. Therefore, if the United States wants to combat criminal groups that traffic drugs and generate violence, we must work together in an integrated manner, but always under the principles of shared responsibility, mutual trust, collaboration, and, above all, respect for sovereignty, which is not negotiable. Coordination, yes; subordination, no,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote on X.
