New Delhi: French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that US President Donald Trump has made an offer to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
“An offer was made, especially to get a ceasefire and to then kick-start broader discussions,” Macron told reporters at the G7 summit.
“We have to see now whether the sides will follow,” he added.
Drawing on his past involvement in international diplomacy, Trump referenced his role in the recent India-Pakistan ceasefire following the attacks in Pahalgam in April 2025.
Trump takes credit for Israel-Hamas hostage deal
This is not the first time Trump has offered a truce deal between the two countries at war. Previously, he has claimed credit for the historic Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal.
“We have a deal for the hostages in the Middle East. They will be released shortly. Thank you!” Trump said on his Truth Social network, before there was any official announcement from outgoing President Joe Biden’s White House, Trump had stated, according to a NDTV report.
In another Truth Social post, Trump claimed full credit for the agreement, saying, “This EPIC ceasefire agreement could have only happened as a result of our Historic Victory in November”. He is a staunch believer in the fact that his administration’s commitment to seeking peace and negotiating deals has sent a powerful signal to the world.
India-Pak ceasefire brokered by US: Trump
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed to have played a pivotal role in brokering the India-Pakistan ceasefire. He wrote, “By using TRADE with the United States to bring reason, cohesion, and sanity to the talks with two excellent leaders who were able to quickly make a decision and STOP!”
However, according to multiple reports, trade incentives were never a part of the official ceasefire discussions. India had previously rejected the Trump administration’s claim that the US brokered the agreement amid rising tensions between the two countries.
Trade or tariff was not part of ceasefire talks: MEA
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, refuted Trump’s claims, stating that trade or tariff discussions were not part of the ceasefire talks.
“The issue of trade or tariffs did not come up in any of those discussions,” Jaiswal said. “The External Affairs Minister has also made it clear that the cessation of firing was decided upon through direct contacts between the DGMOs of India and Pakistan.”
