Trump, Putin will meet in Alaska for high-stakes summit on Russia-Ukraine war

New Delhi: The highly anticipated Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded on Friday after 2.5 hours of talks, leaving the Ukraine conflict unresolved. Despite the absence of a concrete peace deal, both leaders expressed optimism for future progress.

The meeting attracted global attention—from Washington and Moscow to Europe, Ukraine, and even New Delhi—because its outcome could affect whether India faces steeper US tariffs on key imports, including Russian oil.

President Trump characterised the meeting as “productive,” although he acknowledged that no final agreement had been reached. President Putin expressed hope that the discussions could serve as a foundation for peace in Ukraine and the restoration of US-Russia ties.

The summit, the first meeting between the two leaders since 2019, generated significant international attention due to its potential to influence the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The lack of a ceasefire agreement, a key objective stated by President Trump at the outset of the talks, was a notable outcome.

The meeting lacked the inclusion of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who criticised the absence of Ukraine from the talks, despite acknowledging that the summit might still pave the way for peace.

The two presidents spoke briefly to reporters following the summit, but declined to take questions. Specific details of the agreements reached during the meeting are not disclosed. However, the commitment to further discussions, with President Putin suggesting a future meeting in Moscow, indicates a willingness from both sides to continue dialogue.

This is seen as potentially positive for international relations, but also as potentially concerning, given that it took place without Ukrainian involvement.

The summit’s significance extended beyond the immediate negotiation outcomes. For President Putin, the meeting itself signalled Russia’s re-engagement with international diplomacy, a crucial step after years of geopolitical tensions.

However, the lack of visible progress on the Ukrainian front will undoubtedly fuel ongoing debates about the international community’s approach to resolving the conflict. The ongoing conflict and the discussions surrounding it remain of considerable global importance.
