Washington: President Donald Trump will decide within the next two weeks whether to join Israel’s air campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, the White House announced Thursday. The decision will depend on the outcome of ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
During the press briefing, Press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced, “Based on the fact that there’s a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks”.
‘Fordo’, an apt site to conduct strikes: Trump
The press secretary Leavitt assured the “everyday Trump supporters” to keep their faith in the Trump administration. She further added that Trump’s “top priority” is to ensure that Iran does not successfully form a nuclear weapon. The secretory refused to discuss any “hypotheticals” on whether the Iranian officials would be visiting the White House or Trump would provide sanctions to Congress over any US involvement.
The US President was deferring the matter of whether Iran agreed to abandon its nuclear programme, an intelligence source said. Trump is reportedly considering strikes on the Iranian nuclear site Fordo, a subterranean uranium enrichment facility.
Earlier, BBC quoted Iran deputy foreign minister Saeed Khatibzadeh as saying that it would cause a “hell” in the region if the US entered the war. “This is not America’s war,” Khatibzadeh added.
Capable to hit nuclear facilities: Netanyahu
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that Israel possesses the ability to hit all nuclear facilities in Iran, including Fordo, without directly confirming the requirement for US assistance. “We will achieve all our objectives and hit all of their nuclear facilities. We have the capability to do that,” he said. Whether Trump “wants to join or not — that’s entirely his decision,” Netanyahu added.
