Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday said that he was willing to hold direct talks with Russia to end the nearly three-year-long war, once a common position is reached with United States and Europe.
The remarks by Zelenskyy came days after US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin held talks on the ongoing war in Ukraine. Speaking at a conference at German city of Munich, the Ukrainian President said his country was ready for talks with the US and other allies. “ If we get specific answers to our specific requests from US and our other allies and a common understanding with Russia, Ukraine will be ready for with the Russians,” Zelenskyy
‘Must be common position on table’
Earlier, Dmytro Lytvyn, one of Zelenskyy’s advisors had noted that there must be a common position on the table for talks. He said that there was nothing sucj for talks at the moment the position of Ukraine has not changed. He had also noted that Europe will be required to participate in any serious discussion
Trump had recently said that said that he had spoken to his Russian counterpart for the beginning of talks with Ukraine to end war in the region. Zelenskyy had also urged the world leaders not to trust Putin’s claims of readiness to end the war. The president also pointed out that he wanted the US to agree a “plan to stop Putin” before the start of any negotiations.
US Vice President to meet Zeleneskyy for talks
Notably, the European countries which back Ukraine are concerned that Trump might force Ukraine to agree to a peace deal that will leave Kiev facing an even stronger Putin. Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance is likely to meet Zelenskyy for talks that many observers hope will make clear on Trump’s ideas for a settlement to end the war.
