New Delhi: The Ukrainian city of Kherson came under intense bombardment from Russian air and artillery forces on Wednesday, 16th April. The attack, which reportedly involved guided munitions, resulted in a tragic loss of one life and widespread destruction. The Kherson regional military administration confirmed one civilian death and injuries to eight further civilians. This toll represents another grim chapter in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Drone footage captured the aftermath of the strikes, showing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure. A supermarket, a sports facility, residential buildings, and numerous vehicles were visibly affected as confirmed by Kherson Governor, Oleksandr Prokudin. The footage, released by the regional administration, was independently verified through cross-referencing with satellite and other imagery, confirming the location and extent of the damage.

The verification process involved comparing details such as building characteristics, signage, and road layouts, ensuring accuracy and reliability of the visual evidence. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry issued a strong condemnation of the attacks, labelling them as “barbaric” and highlighting the deliberate targeting of civilians with guided aviation bombs. This accusation underscores concerns about the indiscriminate nature of the Russian strikes and the disregard for civilian safety.

In contrast, the Russian government denied any intentional targeting of civilians, a claim that has been consistently disputed by Ukrainian authorities and international observers. The incident continues to highlight the devastating human cost of the conflict and the ongoing challenges in achieving a peaceful resolution. The attacks underscore the volatile security situation in the region and the continuing threat to civilian populations as the conflict, which began more than three years ago, shows no signs of abating.
