The new US administration had sought the military’s help in stopping illegal immigrants from entering the country by sending more troops to the US-Mexico border. The military is also helping in the deportation of illegal immigrants and opening bases for them.

Notably, the deportation of Indians will be the first since Trump took over as the US President. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also raised concerns over illegal immigrants during their interactions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar respectively. After his discussions with PM Modi, Trump had also said that India would do ‘what is right’.Rubio had also raised the issue of ‘irregular immigration’ with Jaishankar, after which the latter had said that India was opposed to illegal immigration to the US.

‘Many illegal activities get involved’

“Many other illegal activities get involved with it. It is neither desirable nor reputationally good. If there are any of our citizens who are here illegally and we are sure that they are citizens of our country, we have been open to their legitimate return to India,” Jaishankar had said. The US flights have also carried out deportations of illegal immigrants to Peru, Guatemala, and Honduras.

Meanwhile, PM Modi will visit the US from February 12. During his visit, the PM will hold talks with US President Donald Trump on several issues, including trade and defense, officials said. Modi will visit the US after his two-day visit to Paris.
